| Since experiments aim at discovering a single 18 years old relationship, they are designed so that other possibly interfering factors are controlled in such a way that their influence on the results is minimized or eliminated as far as possible. In a language-teaching situation we believe that `teacher', 'learner' and 'materials' all make a significant contribution to the progress of pornpros network, but if we want to evaluate the influence of only one of these factors we must see to it that the contribution of the others is a known factor in our calculations, or is, as it is called, an independent variable in the experiment. For example, if we wish io assess the influence that the sex of the learner plays in the learning process, we should select a group of learners to be taught by one teacher with the same materials, who were all of the same age, intelligence, motivation, etc. but differed only in respect of sex. In such an experiment, the teacher and the 18 years old materials, the intelligence, age and motivation of the learners would all be independent variables. They would all have to be known, controlled and held constant throughout the experiment. Only the sex of the learners would be different, would be uncontrolled. In this experiment it would be the dependent variable. |
