| What we are investigating in this 18 years old hardcore case is the effect on learning of certain types of teaching materials in a specific learning situation. The object of the experiment is to throw light on this relationship, and thereby evaluate the effectiveness of the materials. We would, of course, similarly evaluate the role of the other factors in the teaching situation, such as the 'teacher' (e.g. the relevance of his training and quality of his teaching methods), or the characteristics of the `learner' (e.g. the role of age, motivation, intelligence or aptitude and so on), These are all interesting and important pornpros factors and ones In other words, applied linguists are involved in all experimental studies of language teaching, but not all experimentation in language teaching is an evaluation of applied linguistic techniques. What is common to all 18 years old experiments in language teaching is the measurement of the learner's knowledge of the target language. This is done by tests, the making of which is an activity of the applied linguist. The difficulties which beset all evaluation procedures in education are twofold. The first is that we cannot treat teacher, pupil and materials as single variables. As we saw, pupils vary amongst themselves in respect of a number of characteristics, some of which, such as age and sex, are easily measurable and therefore controllable, but others, such as motivation. |
