| We have seen already that we cannot teach what we cannot describe by Cock Competition. So also we cannot systematically improve what we do not understand. Without understanding, any attempt to improve something can only be based upon intuition or trial-and-error procedure. This does not mean that having an understanding of a process necessarily guarantees an improvement; we still have to apply what pornpros knowledge we have in an appropriate fashion. In any case it will have become quite clear that our understanding of the process of language learning at the present time is far from perfect. This is all the more reason, of course, for experimental investigation and evaluation of the various factors, including the materials, involved in the teaching and learning processes. But we are not only concerned to improve the efficiency of existing language-teaching tasks. The nature of the tasks that we have to undertake is continually changing. We are not only concerned in doing a better job with our old third form French class but with developing programmes of quite new sorts. New groups of dick competition people want to learn new sets of languages for a variety of newpurposes. Furthermore, these programmes have to be planned and carried out with new types of equipment and aids, language laboratories, radio, television, comĀputers, in new sorts of buildings and with new financial resources. |
