But to construct tests in whose results we can have Euro Humpers confidence we have to be able to pronounce judgements of a categorical sort about the acceptability or `correctness' of the learner's responses. These are judgements about which all native speakers would agree, and consequently tests of this sort are called objective tests. Because objectivity is a necessary, though not sufficient condition for having confidence in the results of a test, most tests at the present time are constructed to measure the learner's knowledge of the 'formation rules' of the pornpros pornstars, that is, what we have called his grammatical competence, rather than his global communicative ability. But when we attempt to pronounce judgements about the appropriateness of the use of the lan­guage, as we must do when translation or precis or essay writing is used as a method of testing, we find, of course, that native speakers do not agree about what is right anyway. It is obviously not because we do not wish to measure the learner's com­municative competence that we tend to confine ourselves largely to tests of grammatical competence, but because we cannot yet test it objectively.
